Description
Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)
Axolotls are critically endangered in the wild, inhabiting only Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco. They are a lentic species, meaning they inhabit still-water lakes. These amphibians require sub-70°F (21°C) temperatures. More substrates and rocks smaller than their heads should be avoided in their enclosures. Axolotls are carnivores, consuming foods such as earthworms and bloodworms. They also can be fed specialty axolotl food pellets.
Adult axolotls typically are 9 inches (23 cm) in length but can reach 12 inches (30 cm). They weight 50-200 grams. The lifespan of axolotls is 10-15 years in captivity.
